Opportunities For Enrichment

Environmental Club: The Environmental Club consists of many activities to preserve our environment. Children participate in recycling sneakers, reusing Christmas cards, paper, aluminum cans, and plastic wastes. Also, it sells earth pops every Wednesday to profile the Club and make people aware of their responsibility to the community. The Club highlights and conducts a celebration during Earth Week each year by holding an Earth Fair adoption program. St. Margaret Mary School is involved in making the earth a better place.
  School Choir: The school choir is a musical organization for students in grades 4 through 8. Throughout the school year, the choir practices and leads the singing at school liturgies and prayer services for Stations of the Cross and for the May Crowning. The choir students also participate in a diocesan choir workshop and concert in the fall and perform at a school concert in the spring.
Pro Life Club: The Pro Life Club focuses on helping and recognizing life at all stages and in all circumstances. The Club spends time helping, discussing, and hearing from guest speakers, each month. Guests range from police officers, nursing home caregivers, and employees of the St. Martin de Porres Shelter. The guests spoke on life such as infancy, elderly, handicapped, homeless, starving, prisoners, and the sick. They spoke on their various lives and how the Pro Life Club helps them.
The children of the Pro Life Club get involved with our community. Some activities include:
- Collect diapers in May for Morning star Services.
- Raising over $1,000 for Morning star Services.
- Sending Christmas cards to prisoners.
- Visiting area nursing homes to share their time with the residents.
- Sending Christmas cards to nursing home residents.
The Club’s understanding of Pro Life is helping in anyway, with all areas of society and becoming more aware of our ability to help others.
Science Fair: All 7th and 8th grade students at St. Margaret Mary School participate in the school Science Fair. This develops critical thinking skills and familiarity with scientific methodology.
Students are required to complete an individual project with review by the teacher. The students will identify a problem, collect information, form a hypothesis, tests the hypothesis by experimentation, accept or reject the hypothesis and report on the results.
In addition, qualifying projects compete at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science and the Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair (CASEF). This past year at CASEF three St. Margaret Mary students were honored to receive the Young Scientist Award for outstanding projects and their ability to communicate science. They were entered into the next level of science competition for middle school students. This was sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
History Day: All 6th, 7th and 8th grade students of St. Margaret Mary School participate in the school History Day. This event helps the student develop their research, comprehension and presentation skills. If offers the students an opportunity to show their creativity in presenting individual and group exhibits, media presentations, writing papers, and presenting dramatic performances to reflect the historical research that was being presented that year. This year’s presentation highlighted Frontiers in History and all 1st Place winners had the opportunity to participate in National History Day at Shippensburg University.
